Provider Alert! ProAir® HFA Inhaler Discontinuation

Date: October 17, 2022

Attention: All Providers

Effective Date: October 1, 2022

Providers should monitor the Texas Children’s Health Plan (TCHP) Provider Portal regularly for alerts and updates associated to the COVID-19 event. TCHP reserves the right to update and/or change this information without prior notice due to the evolving nature of the COVID-19 event.

Call to action: Texas Children’s Health Plan (TCHP) would like to let providers know that the ProAir® HFA inhaler, one of many preferred asthma inhalers, was discontinued by the manufacturer TEVA on October 1, 2022.

How this impacts providers: Once the current market inventory of ProAir® HFA is exhausted, it will no longer be available by prescription. ProAir HFA inhaler will remain preferred on the formulary until pharmacies to dispense existing stock. The alternatives preferred inhalers on the formulary are either Proventil HFA or Ventolin HFA.

Next steps for providers: Prescribers are encouraged to proactively obtain a prescription for the alternative preferred inhalers.
