Provider Alert! Updates to Phosphate Binder Prior Authorization Criteria Scheduled for April 5

Date: March 10, 2022

Attention: Primary care providers

Effective Date: April 05, 2022

Providers should monitor the Texas Children’s Health Plan (TCHP) Provider Portal regularly for alerts and updates associated to the COVID-19 event.  TCHP reserves the right to update and/or change this information without prior notice due to the evolving nature of the COVID-19 event.

Call to action:
On April 5, 2022, HHSC will revise the phosphate binder non-preferred prior authorization criteria by transferring specific criteria to the phosphate binders’ clinical prior authorization. This update correlates with the recent Texas Drug Utilization Review Board-approved revisions to the phosphate binder clinical prior authorization criteria. In this process, HHSC will also rearrange some of the steps to help improve the way each step flows into the next.

How this impacts providers: Updated prior authorization criteria can be found on Navitus.

Next steps for providers: Prescribers should adjust their prescribing patterns accordingly and share this update with their staff as well
