Provider Alert! Respite Care Services

Call to action: Texas Children’s Health Plan (TCHP) offers a respite care value-added service for STAR Kids members.  Respite care provides temporary relief for parents or legally authorized representatives who are caring for a child with special needs.  TCHP offers 24 hours of in-home respite care service per calendar year as an extension of home and community-based services.

How this impacts providers: This value-added service applies to TCHP STAR Kids members that are not already receiving respite care services through a State Waiver Program.  Respite care value-added services must be requested at least 4 hours before they are needed and providers should bill using HCPCS code H2021 to receive reimbursement.

Next steps for providers: Providers must work directly with the assigned TCHP Service Coordinator to access the respite care value-added service. Please log into the provider portal at https://www.texaschildrenshealthplan.org/for-providers to identify the correct TCHP Service Coordinator.  The information is located on the Eligibility screen towards the bottom of the page under “Additional Information”.

If you have any questions, please email Provider Network Management at: providerrelations@texaschildrens.org.
